What is length of course?
18 months. Top

What is the cost of the course?
£3500 (including provision of 4-volume textbook and all costs related to the induction course with the exception of travel to and from the venue). Additional residential sessions may be arranged at the request of course participants. These will be charged at cost. Top

Where is the next Induction Course to be held?
University of Hertfordshire, de Havilland Conference Centre, Hatfield, UK. Top

What is the rationale for using web-based course?
Historically, the course has been run as a residential taught course. Experience has shown that student-based problem-solving group activity has been found to be better for learning. Three academic advisors (tutors) are available together with a cohort of experts. The team will give technical help and provide solutions relevant to the course. One of the main advantages is that the only requirement is for the student to spend 4 days in the UK at the commencement of the course. Although optional, attendance at the induction course is strongly recommended since it familiarises participants with the learning system and provides an excellent facility for social interaction between tutors, participants and the personnel from the ICT. Top

What are the advantages of undertaking the course?
Successful completion of the project (or 4 individual assignments) and examination at end of course leads to full Membership of the Institute of Concrete Technology. Top

If I am unable to attend the Induction Course in the UK, will I be able to participate?
Yes, although attendance is strongly recommended to aid understanding of the web-based interaction, it is not essential. Top

If I am unable to travel to the UK for the examination will it be possible for me to take it locally?
Yes - the ICT will arrange local venues world-wide for the examination if necessary but this may incur a small charge for invigilation, etc. Top

Is it compulsory for me to undertake a project?
Yes - it is a requirement of the ICT if you do not undertake the 4 individual assignments. Top

What sort of project is acceptable?
Discussions will take place during the Induction Week. Once your subject has been approved you will need a supervisor. Top

Does the project have to be finished before the examination?
It is advisable. It is essential to meet the deadline (normally the end of August) for candidates to be eligible for Distinction Grade. Top

What is the format for the individual assignments?
There will be 4 individual assignments on different topics set by the course providers at intervals during the course. 4 weeks are allowed for completion of the work after which a report of not more than 4,500 words must be submitted through the candidate's personal postbox on the ACT discussion forum for assessment by the ICT. Top

How do I communicate with the organisers?
Email to newman.act@tiscali.co.uk to obtain information about the course. Top

Who is responsible for setting the examination?
The Institute of Concrete Technology. Top

Where will the examination be held?
The ICT will be responsible for establishing the venues as necessary. Top

How does the problem based distance learning system work?
Participants are placed in groups of 5 or 6 and each participant is given the chance (at least once) to be a group leader. For each assignment, the leader is responsible for organising the group work and posting the final report on the website. A time limit of approximately 4 weeks is given for each assignment which is designed to cover the learning objectives of the Institute of Concrete Technology. The final reports are assessed by tutors and experts and comments are posted on the website. To aid the learning process each group has access to the work of all other groups and all draft and final reports. Top

How will the groups be formed?
The tutors will decide on the formation of each group, which will change after every three assignments. Every student will have the opportunity to participate in each assignment. Top

How much time do I need to devote to it?
Approximately 1000 hours. Top

What happens if I am stuck?
Contact the tutors for advice. Top

Do I have access to resources through the Web site?
Yes. Top

When is the 4-volume set of texbooks distributed?
During the Induction Week. Top

If I can't attend the Induction Week where can I obtain the books?
The tutors will arrange for the books to be delivered to a specified address. Top
