The Advanced Concrete Technology Course was a learning course
of 18 months duration leading to the Diploma Examinations of the Institute
of Concrete Technology. It was based on the book 'Advanced Concrete Technology'
published by Elsevier and edited by the late Dr's J B Newman
and Dr B S Choo, which provide information on concrete at
an advanced level.
The course led to the highest award in concrete technology and was open to candidates with appropriate intermediate-level qualifications and experience.
Instead of the traditional lecture-based residential course, the web-based
system provided course participants with project-based learning opportunities
and computer-based self-teaching modules to provide revision, updating
and an advanced understanding of concrete technology. It encouraged the
improvement of thinking skills to aid understanding and access
to information additional to that in the 4 volumes of the ACT book.
The course was organised in such a way as to enable participants to share
information with one another and to interact online with acknowledged
specialist/experts in the topics covered. Before the start of the main
course, an induction course was held in the UK. It was strongly recommended
that all participants attend this course to familiarise themselves with
the procedures. Non-attendees were given guidance notes in addition to the ACT book.
The
course was organised by Dr J B Newman, Mr R A Binns and Dr P L Domone, and accredited
by The Concrete Society / Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT).
Candidates who completed the course successfully are eligible for full
membership of the ICT.
